Audition Information

The mission of the Houston Young Artists’ Concert (HYAC) is to showcase highly talented young classical musicians ages 4 to 18 in a variety of venues throughout the city with the hope of fostering a greater appreciation for Classical music in the Houston area.

Houston Young Artists’ Concert is searching for gifted young musicians from the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area (75 mile radius of downtown Houston) to be recognized as the most promising performers from this corner of the world.

HYAC presents over 30 concerts each year in Houston’s recital halls, Miller Outdoor Theatre, MD Anderson Cancer Center and other unconventional spaces. All winners of the HYAC biennial audition will be given opportunities to perform in those concerts over the next two years.

HYAC will be holding auditions in December of 2018
For information about eligibility, repertoire, and the audition process, please visit www.HYAC.org later.

Eligibility

Applicants must be between the ages of 4 and 18 at the time of the audition and reside within a 75 mile radius of downtown Houston. All instrumentalists, pianists and vocalists are eligible. Small ensembles are especially encouraged to audition. With a separate application an applicant may apply for multiple entries (e.g. violin solo & string quartet).

Repertoire

Applicants may perform any work from the classical repertoire of Western or Eastern cultures. The time limit is 6 minutes for soloists and 8 minutes for ensembles. Cuts in the accompanimental introduction/interludes are acceptable as long as the music flows naturally. Cuts made in the solo part are subject to approval by the HYAC music director. Repertoire should be chosen for audience appeal and will be subject to approval by HYAC’s music director. Simplified arrangements will not be accepted. All soloists must perform from memory. Ensembles and accompanists are allowed to use sheet music.

Accompanists

All soloists must provide their own accompanist for the audition. An accompanist under the age of 25 is recommended. The soloist and accompanist are judged separately. If only a soloist is chosen, he or she will be required to use the staff accompanist when performing at HYAC sponsored events. If both soloist and accompanist are chosen, the accompanist may become an HYAC staff accompanist. If help is needed finding an accompanist for the audition, please call Beatrice Stanley at 281-332-7978.

Audition Procedure

A panel of judges will prescreen applicant videos and select those whom they feel would best represent HYAC. Those performers will move on to the final round, where another panel of judges will hear live auditions. Performances will be judged on musicianship, stage presence and audience appeal. No comments or written critiques will be given. The judges’ decision will be final.

Application and Prescreening

Prescreening will be by video audition only. The prescreening applications will be limited to the first 1000 applications. The online application form will be available between Sept. 12 and Nov. 6, 2016 at https://app.getacceptd.com/hyac. Attach a video to the application. For an ensemble, only one application needs to be submitted. For multiple entries, submit separate applications. The application fee is $40/ entry. By participating in HYAC auditions you agree to allow HYAC to use your picture, video and name in its advertising.

Final Round

Applicants who are chosen for the final round will have their names and audition times posted at www.hyac.org by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2016.
