HYAC Audition Information

Introductory Information:

Every two years HYAC holds auditions in search of the most gifted young musicians from the Greater Houston Metropolis.  Those who are chosen earn the prestigious title of Houston Young Artist are awarded a scholarship and are given many opportunities to perform. HYAC will present to the public its newest pick of Houston’s most talented and aspiring young musicians in their first major concert scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2011 in Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall.

Audition Information:

All pre-school through high school instrumentalists and vocalists living within a 75 mile radius of downtown Houston may apply.  HYAC accepts soloists as well as small ensembles.   Performances will be judged on musicianship, stage presence and audience appeal.  Soloists must perform from memory. There are two rounds of auditions:  preliminaries and finals.  Only the finals will be open to the public.  No written critiques will be given by the judges.  The judges will determine who will advance to the finals and ultimately to the Houston Young Artist status.  Decisions made by the judges will be final.

Accompanists:

HYAC uses the age of the performers as part of the appeal for its audiences. Instrumentalists and vocalists must furnish their own accompanist for the auditions. An accompanist under the age of 25 is recommended. If the accompanist receives the judges' approval in the final round, he/she will be considered a staff accompanist for HYAC. Only staff accompanists will be used in HYAC concerts. Contact Kana Mimaki (kmimaki@hotmail.com) if you need help finding an accompanist.

The downloadable application form(s) must be filled in accurately.  Only one member of a duet team or ensemble needs to submit an application.  Those who wish to audition in two different categories (i.e. violin solo and string quartet) must submit two separate application forms.   The application fee is $30 per soloist and $40 per ensemble.

The deadline for submitting applications is November 1, 2010.

Results from the preliminaries will be posted on the HYAC website by December 6. For those who will be continuing on to the final round, a new audition time will be given. On the night of the final round, a congratulatory letter will be posted on the website with the names of the new Houston Young Artists. Performers in the final round who do not receive that distinction will be showcased in a special recital of "Houston Rising Stars" (TBA).

Attention to all finalists:  A mandatory rehearsal is scheduled the night before each concert.  Houston Young Artists will rehearse on Friday, January 21, from 5 - 9 PM and the “Houston Rising Stars” rehearsal is TBA.

Attention to Houston Young Artists only:  A private party in your honor will be given on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 2 - 4 PM.  Please set this date and time aside.
