Introductory Information:
Every two years HYAC holds auditions in search of the most gifted young musicians from the Greater Houston Metropolis. Those who are chosen earn the prestigious title of Houston Young Artist are awarded a scholarship and are given many opportunities to perform. HYAC will present to the public its newest pick of Houston's most talented and aspiring young musicians in their first major concert at the Morris Cultural Arts Center Theater on the Houston Baptist University Campus on Saturday, March 7, 2009.
Audition Information:
All pre-school through high school instrumentalists and vocalists living within a 75 mile radius of downtown Houston may apply. HYAC accepts soloists as well as small ensembles. Performances will be judged on musicianship, stage presence and audience appeal. Soloists must perform from memory. There are two rounds of closed auditions: the preliminaries and the finals. No written critiques will be given in either. Decisions made by the judges will be final.
Repertoire Requirements:
- Any standard classical composition of Western Civilization; or
- Traditional music from any other culture.
Performances are limited to 7 minutes per soloist or duettists and 10 minutes per ensemble (3 or more performers). More than one piece may be performed as long as the total time remains within the stipulated limits. All music performed is subject to approval by HYAC’s Music Director. Simplified arrangements will not be accepted.
Accompanists:
HYAC uses the age of the performers as part of the appeal for its audience. Instrumentalists and vocalists must furnish their own accompanist for the auditions. An accompanist under the age of 25 is recommended. Should both soloist and accompanist be chosen in the final round, the accompanist will be considered a Staff Accompanist for HYAC and be given the opportunity to collaborate with other soloists whose accompanists did not meet the judges standards. Only Staff Accompanists will be used in HYAC concerts. Contact us if you need help finding a professional accompanist.
Application:
The downloadable application form(s) must be filled in accurately. Only one member of a duet team or ensemble needs to submit an application. Those who wish to audition in two different categories (i.e. violin solo and string quartet) must submit two separate application forms. There is a $25 fee for each application.
Deadline:
The deadline for submitting applications is December 15, 2008.
Notification:
By January 1, 2009, all performers will be issued a reference number and a scheduled audition time (via e-mail) for the preliminaries. NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES MADE TO THE SCHEDULE! Results from the preliminaries will be posted on the HYAC website by January 26. For those who will be continuing on to the final round, a new audition time will be given. A congratulatory letter with the names of the new Houston Young Artists will be posted on the night of the final round.
